Seminar in Boardman Focuses on Small Business Role in Shale Boom

As a number of big companies move into the area to develop oil and natural gas resources, there could be some big opportunities down the road for local businesses thanks to the Utica and Marcellus shale.
Much the same way there have been spinoff jobs arising because of the General Motors Complex in Lordstown building the Chevy Cruze, oil and gas exploration in this part of Ohio and Pennsylvania could mean big business for a lot of small companies.
On Wednesday, a seminar sponsored by the Regional Chamber and the Ohio Shale Coalition was held in Boardman. It was aimed at helping local manufacturing and service companies get involved in the supply side of the oil and gas industry.
One of those is Panelmatic Youngstown, Inc., a business specializing in building electrical control panels for various industries.
"Small companies like us, I mean, when we get into this it'll be great, but trying to get into it is very tough and we're using our resources we have," said company vice president Cory Jones.
He said landing contracts takes a lot of background work.
