Canton Still Sees Itself as a Major Piece of Utica Shale Puzzle

The southern shift in the Utica Shale’s so-called sweet spot means drilling is moving away from Stark County and Canton, the self-branded Utica Capital.

Since 2011, horizontal drilling and fracking have moved south and east from Carroll County, the core Utica drilling area in terms of total wells and production.

But David Kaminski, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s director of energy and public affairs, said Stark still has a good position.

“In terms of the Utica, there are not a lot of other cities of our capability who are as engaged in this as we are,” Kaminski said.

Stark County has landed the state’s top shale driller, Chesapeake Energy, along with oilfield service companies and industry-linked engineering firms and law offices, and is next door to Carroll County, the most actively drilled Utica county in the state.
