Three New Utica Shale Permits Issued in Ohio Last Week; Rig Count Increases

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has released the latest weekly update on Utica shale permitting activity, and it was another slow week.

Only three new permits were issued in the state last week.  XTO Energy received a permit for its Violet Unit 5H well in Belmont County, Chesapeake Exploration was granted a permit for the R Kirk 32-11-3 10H well in Jefferson County, and American Petroleum Partners received its first Utica shale permit, which is for the Black River 7H well in Jefferson County.

As permitting continues to creep along towards the 2,000 mark, the number of wells drilled and producing also is gradually increasing.  There are now 1,985 permits issued, 1,568 wells drilled, and 935 wells producing.  The Utica rig count increased by two and now stands at 22.
